Sue and I headed off Tuesday 10/08/24 for a couple of days on a Sunapee Lake Area Fall Foliage Trip
The weather was great, and the Fall colors were spectacular.
We spent several hours winding through the back roads as much as we could to not only avoid the highway, but also just to enjoy the foliage colors along the way.
We met up with friends Paul and Val in Cornish, NH to tour the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Park. That is quite the experience as we took a guided tour of the grounds. Well worth it as there is so much to learn about this great American sculptor. Later that afternoon we had a nice relaxing early dinner with them at the Flying Goose Restaurant in New London, NH.
We had such a great day and it was still early after finishing up with dinner that Sue and I stopped off at Bubba's Bar & Grille in Newbury, NH right at the foot of Lake Sunapee for a glass of wine.
Wednesday morning we decided again to head for home over more of the back roads than highway. We started out by driving back up to New London for a nice breakfast at Tuckers on Main Street. From there, we wandered over to 4a south, just sort of taking it all in.
It was such a lovely Autumn day that Sue thought it would be nice to head for the Canterbury Shaker Village and walk around the grounds. Even though we've been there a couple of times before, it's such a fascinating place that I don't think I'd ever get tired of going there.
Since we've taken tours there before, we just wandered around the grounds for awhile - Sue wandering off and taking pictures for everything from majestic roof lines to small flowers poking out from around old weathered fence posts.
Our friend Gail graciously accepted our invitation for a couple of nights at our hose to watch Beau while we were gone. I fixed a great seared shrimp over mushroom and herb seasoned couscous dinner which Sue added oven baked squash.
All along the way we say wonderful foliage as well as historic sites such as this one along scenic Route 103.
I thought that this was the most spectacular of Gaudens' works. I would have had no idea of just how spectacular it was without being on that tour.
His beautiful mansion that you get to go inside if you're on one of the tours. You just get to see part of the house on the first floor, but it's worth taking the time to see it as part of the tour.
Paul and Val outside of the visitor center.
Paul was nice enough to take this picture of Sue and me.
An amazing view of one of his spectacular studios.
After visiting St-Gaudens, we drove back to Sunapee to check in at our hotel, the very cute Lake Inn at Mt. Sunapee. This was our view through the screens on the small outside screened in porch.
After dinner drinks at Bubba's Bar & Grille in Newbury, NH
On the road back home early Wednesday afternoon.
We just love the views here of the Canterbury, NH Town Hall. We just had to stop so Sue could walk around and take some pictures.
Canterbury Shaker Village
Back home just in time to catch the sun dropping over the tree line and pouring a golden glow over the colorful leaves out back.
