04/04/24: Massive Winter Nor'easter Snow Storm

Late Wednesday night and all through Thursday 04/04/24 we got hit with a massive Nor'easter snow storm that knocked power out to many towns in New Hampshire, New Durham being one of them.

We learned later that, even though the wind gusts, which had been 45 to 50mph, had fallen trees, the reason so many towns were shut down was because New Hampshire Electric Co-op (NHEC) had lost power from their main supplier somehow. Whereas the larger towns like Dover are serviced by Eversource, smaller towns rely on NHEC.

When we got up Thursday morning around 7:00am there was a little over a foot on the ground already. By the time the plow guys came, there must have been 14 to 16 inches, and just a couple hours later when I went out to shovel off the deck and clear in front of the barn there was at least another 3 to 4 inches that had fallen.

And it continued to snow steadily throughout the day and into the evening Thursday. It was still snowing, though lightly, when we got up Friday morning, finally tapering off around noon.

Though the last picture of the snow depth gauge shows 20 inches, we probably got several inches more than that because most of the snow was wet and heavy. So wet and heavy, that it took down numerous trees and power lines Thursday. Power wasn't restored until

Things started late Wednesday afternoon, and though you can't really see: the air was filled with lightly falling snow. We knew it was coming...

Snow depth gauge reading 12 inches at around 7:00 am Thursday morning.

This is what greeted Sue when she opened the screen door to let Beau out to do his bid-ness this morning.

That dot by the trees is Beau heading out to do his bid-ness in the woods.

Sue snapped this picture of Beau finally getting back inside from doing his bid-ness. He was so covered with snow, and so many frozen balls hanging from his fur that all we could do was brush the top layer off of him and let the rest melt off onto the floor everywhere he went.

Current Picture
About an hour after he came inside, a huge wind gust caused a lot of the snow on the branches to come crashing down. He would have been really pissed off it he'd been under that tree then....

Sue got this picture of Beau Friday morning at 7:45am heading out to the woods to do his bid-ness.

But just the day after on Saturday 04/06/24, things had changed dramatically.

Current Picture
Snow cover had dropped from 20 inches to just 13 inches!

The Beau Dog supervised as I dug a path through the snow out around the car to the buried wood pile as we had burned through most of the last 2 cart loads I had brought in just before the storm. I ended up not only finishing off this pile, but used almost a cart full from the new pile.

While I was doing all of that, Sue picked Mia up in Dover, and the two of them went to another wood working project at the Somersworth Home Depot.
