Saturday 07/21, Sue and I planned an ExcellentRoad Trip Adventure to America's Stonehenge in Salem, NH. From there, the six of us drove over to The Tuscan Kitchen for a great, though what I thought was a little pricey, Italian dinner.
And then after stuffing ourselves with canolies, we headed up I95 to the IMAX theater in Hookset, NH to see the new 2012 Batman, The Dark Knight Rises movie. A long day, but just a lot of fun to share with everyone.
Sue and I took Tony with us in my car, and Rick had Linda and Tim with him. Rick had stopped off in Portsmouth to pick Tim up, and then they drove up to meet us at our place in time for us all to head out at 1:00pm. That put us at America's Stonehenge at 2:00pm and gave us an hour and a half to explore.
The museum had so much interesting stuff in it that I could have got totally hung up in there. But we needed to press on! We had all got a reduced rate coupon from Groupon, but I wouldn't hesitate to pay full price if I go back as it is really so interesting. There is a hiking trail through the woods back to the site that has some interesting stops along the way.
But the site itself is amazing, dating back some 4,000 years! Now, it's not like the Stonehenge in Britian. There are no huge monoliths rising out of the groud in a circle, but there are impressive rock formations that boggle the mind as to how they were cut and transported. And it was definately created as an astrological site as there are huge stones marking paths of the different equonoxes, moon phases, etc. In fact, from the main tower that sits on the center of the site, there is a diagram with arrows radiating out to those stones clearly marking those paths. In a few of the cases, a path has been cut through the trees along the site line. It's just amazing stuff.
